Board Chair

A physician-scientist turned farmer, Tom Croghan is the co-owner and executive winemaker at The Vineyards at Dodon in Davidsonville, MD. He is also the founding Chair of the Dodon Center for Ecological Farming, part of Dodon’s Do Your Part Initiative. Widely recognized for its ecological approach to wine growing, Dodon seeks to restore functioning ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, sequester carbon dioxide, and reduce its chemical and physical footprint. Raised in rural West Virginia, Tom holds an M.D. from West Virginia University. After training in Internal Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Cellular Immunology at the University of North Carolina and Stanford, he held academic and health research appointments at several academic and private sector organizations. Until he retired in December 2022, Tom was a Senior Fellow at Mathematica Policy Research, where his research and policy analysis focused on treating mental health conditions in primary care settings, measuring and incentivizing healthcare quality, and racial and ethnic disparities in access and quality of healthcare. Tom’s essays on farming, viticulture, and Maryland agricultural policy have appeared in the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, Meininger’s International, and Maryland Matters. He has served on the Board of Directors of Future Harvest, a regional regenerative agriculture organization, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of WineAmerica, a national trade group. Tom is a lead team member for The Porto Protocol’s Living Vineyards project.
